Pas vijf jaar later schreef hij weer een boek onder eigen naam, Il saggiatore , de analyticus. Hierin beschouwde hij op een voor die tijd ongebruikelijke, bijna cynische, wijze de manier waarop wetenschap werd bedreven.

Galilei droeg dit boek op aan zijn goede vriend Maffeo kardinaal Barberini, de toenmalige paus Urbanus VIII.

Een jaar later, in , ging Galilei weer naar Rome en sprak daar met paus Urbanus over zijn werk, onder meer over zijn theorie over de getijden, die volgens hem ook zouden duiden op een bewegende aarde.

Paus Urbanus gaf Galilei toestemming om een boek te schrijven over de heliocentrische theorie zolang hij het maar als een theoretische mogelijkheid beschouwde en niet als een bewezen feit.

Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, tolemaico e copernicano is het boek waar Galilei vanaf aan gewerkt heeft. Hij voltooide het in Het boek had eerst een andere titel, Dialogo sul flusso e il reflusso del mare Dialoog over de getijden , maar die werd door de Inquisitie afgekeurd.

Galilei kreeg opdracht om alle verwijzingen naar de getijden uit de titel en van de frontispies zie tweede afbeelding rechts te verwijderen. Dat was omdat hij eerder met zijn getijdentheorie had willen aantonen dat de aarde om de zon draaide.

Het boek ontving al snel het imprimatur , de benodigde toestemming om het te laten drukken. In dit boek behandelt Galilei de twee tot dan bekende modellen over de ordening van het heelal.

Hij schreef echter niets over het inmiddels bekend geworden model van Brahe of Keplers Astronomia Nova en Tabulae Rudolphinae Evenmin schrijft hij iets over de baan van de aarde, waarvan Kepler al had berekend dat die de vorm van een ellips had.

Galilei ging uit van een cirkelvormige baan. Het boek van Galilei was geen "state of the art wetenschap", maar blonk uit door zijn leesbaarheid.

Het was geschreven in het Italiaans, terwijl wetenschappelijke werken in die tijd meestal in het Latijn werden uitgegeven. Hij sloot het boek af met een dialoog over de getijden, die aan zouden moeten tonen dat de aarde wel degelijk bewoog.

Aan het eind van die dialoog legde hij Simplicio enkele opmerkingen van de paus in de mond. In feite werd daarmee de paus belachelijk gemaakt.

Die werd vereenzelvigd met Simplicimo, degene die de discussie overtuigend verloor. Hoewel de paus een vriend was, was hij woedend na het lezen van het boek.

De paus moest een krachtige indruk maken en kon niet met zich laten sollen, vanwege alle spanningen met de protestanten.

Hierdoor kon hij niet anders dan opnieuw een onderzoek naar Galilei te laten instellen. In was Galilei al een oude man van 69 jaar.

Men zegt dat hij na het vernemen van het vonnis, levenslang huisarrest, de woorden "Eppur si muove! Deze uitspraak is echter apocrief en werd niet door een tijdgenoot opgetekend.

Copernicus' werk werd door wetenschappers wel gelezen maar trok pas de aandacht van het Vaticaan toen Galilei ernaar begon te verwijzen.

Kepler had met zijn drie wetten al een belangrijke theoretische basis gelegd voor het heliocentrisch denken. Het heliocentrische wereldbeeld werd vijftig jaar later door Isaac Newton verder aannemelijk gemaakt.

In oktober sprak paus Johannes Paulus II een excuus uit, waarmee Galilei's naam werd gezuiverd en Galilei erkend werd als gelovig mens.

Seine Intention war es nicht, die Kirche zu widerlegen oder zu spalten, vielmehr war ihm an einer Reform der Weltsicht der Kirche gelegen.

Seine verschiedenen Aufenthalte in Rom bis zum Jahr hatten auch den Zweck, Kirchenmänner wie Bellarmin davon zu überzeugen, dass die Peripatetiker nicht unfehlbar waren und Aussagen astronomischen Gehalts in der Heiligen Schrift nicht immer buchstabengetreu gelesen werden müsse.

Auch war Galilei davon überzeugt, die Werke Gottes durch Experiment und Logik früher oder später vollständig klären zu können.

Der Inquisitionsprozess gegen Galilei hat zu endlosen historischen Kontroversen und zahlreichen literarischen Bearbeitungen angeregt; unter anderem in Bertolt Brechts Leben des Galilei.

Der Autor, ein gewisser Settele, war Kanoniker. Für Nicht-Kleriker war das Interdikt wohl längst belanglos geworden.

November wurde Galileo Galilei von der römisch-katholischen Kirche formal rehabilitiert. Es war sogar geplant, Galilei durch eine Statue im Vatikan zu ehren, [28] rückte der Vatikan davon aber ohne Angabe von Gründen ab, obwohl ein Modell bereits hergestellt worden war und ein Sponsor existierte.

Galilei gilt als wesentlicher Begründer der modernen Naturwissenschaften. Zum anderen forderte er, den so gewonnenen Ergebnissen eine Vorrangstellung vor rein philosophisch oder theologisch begründeten Aussagen über die Natur zuzuerkennen.

Es blieb nicht aus, dass Galilei als dem wesentlichen Begründer der experimentellen Methodik vorgeworfen wurde, einige der von ihm beschriebenen und als Beleg für die Korrektheit seiner Theorien ausgegebenen Experimente niemals selbst durchgeführt zu haben.

Das gilt in wesentlichen Punkten als widerlegt siehe Betrug und Fälschung in der Wissenschaft. Galilei hatte an der schiefen Ebene erstmals die Zunahme der Fallgeschwindigkeit nachgemessen und gefunden, dass sie nicht in diskreten Graden und nicht in Proportion zur durchlaufenen Strecke zunimmt, sondern dass sie in Proportion zur verstrichenen Zeit vom Wert null an stetig anwächst und bis zum Erreichen der Endgeschwindigkeit alle dazwischen liegenden Werte durchläuft.

Seine experimentelle Innovation bestand in der Verwendung einer Fallrinne als schiefe Ebene , mit der er die Fallgesetze auf einer verlangsamten Zeitskala studieren konnte.

Die Beschleunigung bestimmte er über seinen Puls , mit Wasseruhren oder dadurch, dass der Körper ein rhythmisches Signal auslöst, wenn der Auslöser in geeigneten Abständen platziert ist.

Die verbreitete Geschichte über Galileis eigenhändig durchgeführte Fallversuche vom Schiefen Turm in Pisa sind als Legende einzustufen, denn es gibt keinen verlässlichen Beleg dafür.

Ebenso wurde und wird vereinzelt immer noch bezweifelt, dass Galilei die Versuche zur beschleunigten Bewegung auf der schiefen Ebene wirklich durchgeführt hat.

Die Begründung beruhte ursprünglich darauf, dass im gesamten Nachlass Galileis, der Anfang des Jahrhunderts publiziert worden war, fast keine Aufzeichnungen zu durchgeführten Messungen zu finden waren.

Wie aus dem Titel der Discorsi hervorgeht, veröffentlichte Galilei seine Ergebnisse über die Festigkeit eines Balkens mit dem vollen Bewusstsein, damit eine neue Wissenschaft zu begründen.

Die weitere Entwicklung hat ihm recht gegeben; sein Beitrag kann tatsächlich als Begründung der Festigkeitslehre gelten.

Eine quantitative Theorie konnte er allerdings noch nicht aufstellen. Den heute Neutralfläche genannten Bereich verschwindender Zug- bzw.

Druckspannung ordnete er am unteren Rand des eingespannten Balkens statt in der Mitte des Balkenquerschnittes an.

Korrekturen dieses Irrtums konnten sich im Jahrhundert nicht durchsetzen; erst Anfang des Jahrhunderts sorgte Navier erfolgreich für eine Richtigstellung.

On 30 November , the 27 EU transport ministers involved reached an agreement that Galileo should be operational by , [35] but later press releases suggest it was delayed to In mid, the public-private partnership fell apart, and the European Commission decided to nationalise the Galileo programme.

In early , the EU had yet to decide how to pay for the system and the project was said to be "in deep crisis" due to lack of more public funds.

European Union research and development projects could be scrapped to overcome a funding shortfall.

In November , it was agreed to reallocate funds from the EU's agriculture and administration budgets [40] and to soften the tendering process in order to invite more EU companies.

In April , the EU transport ministers approved the Galileo Implementation Regulation. In June , the European Court of Auditors published a report, pointing out governance issues, substantial delays and budget overruns that led to project stalling in , leading to further delays and failures.

In October , the European Commission cut the number of satellites definitively planned from 28 to 22, with plans to order the remaining six at a later time.

It also announced that the first OS, PRS and SoL signal would be available in , and the CS and SOL some time later. In November , a ground station for Galileo was inaugurated near Kourou French Guiana.

In December , EU ministers in Brussels voted Prague , in the Czech Republic , as the headquarters of the Galileo project. In that same month, Wikileaks revealed that Berry Smutny, the CEO of the German satellite company OHB-System , said that Galileo "is a stupid idea that primarily serves French interests".

The first two Galileo In-Orbit Validation satellites were launched by Soyuz ST-B flown from Centre Spatial Guyanais on 21 October , [53] and the remaining two on 12 October The first four pairs of satellites were launched on 22 August , 27 March , 11 September and 17 December In January , news agencies reported that six of the passive hydrogen masers PHM and three of the rubidium atomic clocks RAFS had failed.

Four of the full operational satellites have each lost at least one clock; but no satellite has lost more than two. The operation has not been affected as each satellite is launched with four clocks 2 PHM and 2 RAFS.

The possibility of a systemic flaw is being considered. Additionally some refurbishment is required for the rubidium atomic clocks that still have to be launched.

For the passive hydrogen masers operational measures are being studied to reduce the risk of failure. ESA has contacted the Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO who initially reported not having experienced similar failures.

In July , the European Commission reported that the main causes of the malfunctions have been identified and measures have been put in place to reduce the possibility of further malfunctions of the satellites already in space.

From 11 July till 18 July , the whole constellation experienced an "unexplained" signal outage [68] [69] with all active satellites showing "NOT USABLE" status on the Galileo status page.

On 14 Dec , starting at UTC, Galileo experienced a system-wide performance degradation lasting for 6 hours.

In September , China joined the Galileo project. In July , Israel signed an agreement with the EU to become a partner in the Galileo project.

On 3 June , the European Union and Ukraine signed an agreement for Ukraine to join the project, as noted in a press release. In mid, the public—private partnership fell apart and the European Commission decided to nationalise Galileo as an EU programme.

On 30 November , the 27 member states of the European Union unanimously agreed to move forward with the project, with plans for bases in Germany and Italy.

Spain did not approve during the initial vote, but approved it later that day. This greatly improved the viability of the Galileo project: "The EU's executive had previously said that if agreement was not reached by January , the long-troubled project would essentially be dead".

Norway, while not a member of the EU, is a member of ESA. As a member of ESA , it already collaborated in the development of the Galileo satellites, contributing the state-of-the-art hydrogen-maser clocks.

Switzerland's financial commitment for the period — will be calculated in accordance with the standard formula applied for the Swiss participation in the EU research Framework Programme.

In March , the European Commission announced that the United Kingdom may be excluded from parts of the project especially relating to the secured service PRS following its exit from the European Union EU.

ARAIM: Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring [93]. Each Galileo satellite has two master passive hydrogen maser atomic clocks and two secondary rubidium atomic clocks which are independent of one other.

Under normal conditions, the operating hydrogen maser clock produces the reference frequency from which the navigation signal is generated.

Should the hydrogen maser encounter any problem, an instantaneous switchover to the rubidium clock would be performed. In case of a failure of the primary hydrogen maser the secondary hydrogen maser could be activated by the ground segment to take over within a period of days as part of the redundant system.

A clock monitoring and control unit provides the interface between the four clocks and the navigation signal generator unit NSU. It passes the signal from the active hydrogen master clock to the NSU and also ensures that the frequencies produced by the master clock and the active spare are in phase, so that the spare can take over instantly should the master clock fail.

The NSU information is used to calculate the position of the receiver by trilaterating the difference in received signals from multiple satellites.

The onboard passive hydrogen maser and rubidium clocks are very stable over a few hours. If they were left to run indefinitely, though, their timekeeping would drift, so they need to be synchronized regularly with a network of even more stable ground-based reference clocks.

These include active hydrogen maser clocks and clocks based on the caesium frequency standard , which show a far better medium and long-term stability than rubidium or passive hydrogen maser clocks.

These clocks on the ground are gathered together within the parallel functioning Precise Timing Facilities in the Fucino and Oberpfaffenhofen Galileo Control Centres.

The ground based clocks also generate a worldwide time reference called Galileo System Time GST , the standard for the Galileo system and are routinely compared to the local realisations of UTC, the UTC k of the European frequency and time laboratories.
